ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Ettore Sottsass was a prominent Italian architect and designer born in 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria. He graduated from the Turin Polytechnic in 1939 and began his career during a time when design was evolving rapidly. His early work included collaborations with various companies, but his most notable partnership was with Olivetti, where he designed iconic products such as the Elea 9003 electronic calculator and the Valentine typewriter. These designs showcased his innovative approach to technology and aesthetics, blending functionality with striking visual appeal.

In 1981, Sottsass founded the Memphis Group, a design collective that became synonymous with postmodern design. The Memphis Group challenged traditional design norms through its bold use of color, unconventional shapes, and playful patterns. Their work often incorporated elements from various cultural references, including Art Deco and Pop Art, making it both accessible and avant-garde. This movement marked a significant departure from minimalism and modernism, allowing for a more expressive and eclectic approach to design.

Sottsass also established Sottsass Associati in 1980, a consultancy that undertook diverse projects ranging from architecture to product design. His firm worked with major international brands, creating showrooms, furniture, and consumer electronics that reflected his signature style. Sottsass’s designs were characterized by their emotional resonance and ability to provoke thought, emphasizing that design should not only serve functional purposes but also enhance human experiences.

Ettore Sottsass's legacy endures through his influential contributions to design, which are celebrated in major museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum. His work has inspired generations of designers and continues to be relevant in contemporary discussions about aesthetics and functionality. Sottsass's belief that design could shape emotions and cultural narratives solidified his status as a key figure in 20th-century design history.
