MARALUNGA ARMCHAIR — VICO MAGISTRETTI FOR CASSINA, 1973
A$3,000.00

An iconic example of Italian post-war design, this Maralunga armchair was designed by Vico Magistretti for Cassina in 1973, and is the smaller of the two original Maralunga armchair proportions, measuring approximately 98 cm wide.

The Maralunga is one of Magistretti's most recognisable designs, defined by its generous, almost enveloping upholstery and ingenious adjustable headrest. A simple mechanism concealed within the structure allows the backrest to move between a lower, more upright position and a raised position for deeper relaxation — an innovation that became central to the design and was patented by Cassina.

This example has been professionally reupholstered in a striking electric blue 1980s deadstock honeycomb velvet. The unusual vintage textile gives the otherwise familiar Maralunga a distinctly different character, accentuating the chair's exaggerated curves, deep cushions and sculptural silhouette. The subtle geometric texture of the honeycomb weave adds another layer of interest to the saturated blue upholstery.

The smaller proportions make this version particularly appealing where space is limited, while retaining the exceptionally generous, lounge-like comfort for which the Maralunga is known.

The Maralunga has become one of the defining pieces of Italian furniture design of the 1970s and is held in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The design is also associated with Magistretti's 1979 Compasso d'Oro-winning Maralunga project.

A particularly strong example for a contemporary interior, pairing an internationally recognised design with an unexpected and genuinely period textile.

AXEL DI PIETROBON ARMCHAIRS — ITALY, 1970S
A$4,500.00

(Two Available)

A rare and highly sculptural 1970s Italian armchair by Axel Di Pietrobon, distinguished by its enveloping form, deeply gathered brown leather upholstery and contrasting tobacco velvet seat cushion.

The chair exemplifies the expressive character of Italian furniture design of the period, with an almost architectural construction softened by generous padding and extensive gathered upholstery. The leather is drawn into fine vertical folds across the arms, back and outer shell, giving the chair its distinctive sculptural quality and an unusually tactile appearance.

A polished metal band wraps around the base of the upholstered body, creating a crisp horizontal detail between the substantial leather shell and lower base. The combination of rounded forms, polished metal and rich brown upholstery gives the chair a distinctly 1970s Italian character, somewhere between lounge furniture and sculpture.

The chair retains its original brown leather upholstery, which has developed a warm, rich patina over time. The generous seat cushion has been upholstered in deep tobacco velvet, with button detailing and gathered edges that complement the pleated leather beautifully.

Importantly, the chair retains its original manufacturer tags, providing valuable provenance and further confirming its attribution to Axel Di Pietrobon. Original tagged examples of Di Pietrobon furniture are particularly desirable given the relative scarcity of his work on the international vintage market.

A particularly impressive piece for collectors of Italian design, with the combination of documented designer attribution, original manufacturer tags, original leather and distinctive period construction making it considerably more interesting than a generic 1970s Italian lounge chair.

Designer: Axel Di Pietrobon
Origin: Italy
Period: 1970s
Upholstery: Original brown leather with tobacco velvet seat cushion
Details: Original manufacturer tags, polished metal band, gathered leather upholstery, buttoned velvet cushion

Dimensions: 990mm wide x 1100mm deep x 720mm high back & 480mm high seat

An exceptionally characterful example of 1970s Italian design, retaining its original leather, manufacturer tags and distinctive period detailing.

'TIME LIFE LOBBY CHAIR' DESIGNED BY EAMES FOR HERMAN MILLER & SOLD BY FEATHERSTON
A$7,500.00

There are examples of the Time Life Lobby Chair, but none so special as this one. Originally designed in 1959 for the Time & Life Building in New York, the Eames Lobby Chair reinterprets the lightness of the Aluminium Group into a more substantial, executive form. Individually upholstered leather cushions are mounted to a polished die-cast aluminium frame, creating a structured yet inviting silhouette defined by clarity of line and proportion.

Produced by Herman Miller this particular example was sold by iconic Australian husband and wife duo Grant & Mary Featherston from their Melbourne store which operated from 1966 - 1976. It still retains the Featherston Interiors label and therefore offers a significant artifact of international design.

In excellent vintage condition, the leather presents well and is soft. The foam is supportive and the aluminium frame in excellent condition. This is a collectors piece and has been respected as such.

SET OF FOUR “PAN AM” CHAIRS BY GASTONE RINALDI FOR RIMA (ITALY, 1960s)
A$8,000.00

An elegant set of four Pan Am chairs designed by influential Italian modernist Gastone Rinaldi for RIMA, showcasing the designer’s celebrated approach to sculptural metal furniture and post-war Italian innovation.

Constructed from polished chromed steel rod, the chairs feature a striking open-wire basket form suspended above a flowing circular cantilever base. The rhythmic geometry of the wirework references the iconic globe motif of the modernist Pan American Airways logo — a fitting inspiration for a design conceived during the height of the jet-age era, when aviation, futurism and technological optimism heavily influenced contemporary architecture and furniture design.

The curved steel lines create a remarkable sense of movement and transparency, giving the chairs a light architectural presence despite their sculptural form. Viewed from different angles, the layered wire construction produces shifting geometric patterns and shadow play, reinforcing the chairs’ distinctly Space Age character.

Designed during the late 1960s–1970s period of radical Italian experimentation, the Pan Am chairs embody the futuristic optimism that defined the era. Their balance of engineering precision and expressive form allows them to function equally as practical seating and sculptural collectible objects within contemporary interiors.

Under Gastone Rinaldi’s direction, RIMA became one of Italy’s most progressive furniture manufacturers, recognised for pushing the possibilities of tubular steel and chromed metal construction. Today, the Pan Am chairs remain among the designer’s most recognisable and sought-after works.

In excellent vintage condition, these chairs only display light patina to the chrome frames and still hold the original plastic glides. A very rare set of four in this condition.

JØRGEN KASTHOLM

The Danish furniture designer Jørgen Kastholm created furniture where Form, Function and Finish comes together beautifully. He produced a collection of furniture that is today an intrinsic part of Danish design DNA.

Kastholm first trained as a blacksmith, and later went to study architecture at the School of Interior Design in Copenhagen under Finn Juhl. Here he met cabinetmaker Preben Fabricius. He graduated as an Architect in 1958. In 1961 Fabricius & Kastholm opened a design studio together in Denmark.

They exhibited at the Furniture Fair in Fredericia where the German furniture manufacturer Alfred Kill noticed their work and offered them a contract with Kill International. In 1968 the pair went separate ways.

Kastholm was appointed professor at Bergische University in Wuppertal where he taught design from 1975 to 1996.

He continued his work in Germany as well as in his house in Mallorca. He returned to Denmark shortly before he died in 2007.

PREBEN JUUL FABRICIUS

Fabricius was trained as a cabinetmaker by Niels Vodder before attending the School for Interior Design where he studied under Finn Juhl. It was there that he met the blacksmith Jørgen Kastholm. They had a common approach to furniture design, never wanting to compromise on aesthetics. In 1961, the pair set up a design studio in a Gentofte cellar without any firm arrangements with manufacturers. In 1965, they exhibited at the furniture fair in Fredericia where the German furniture manufacturer Alfred Kill noticed their work. Kill had a reputation for high quality but initially Favricius and Kastholm were not keen to design furniture for factory production. Only when Kill offered them DM 2,500 a month each, with no preconditions, did they agree to work for him. They travelled to Stuttgart with their first designs for production in Kill's factory in nearby Fellbach. Their international breakthrough came at the Cologne Fair in 1966 when they exhibited a whole series of office and home furniture leading to orders from ten large furniture concerns. Their minimalistic designs, both attractive and comfortable, were usually in steel and leather. The Tulip Chair, the Grasshopper Chair and the Scimitar Chair are among their most successful works.

The pieces of furniture they produced during their seven-year period of cooperation from 1961 to 1968 were so distinctive that many are still produced today as classics. As a result of disagreements, the pair decided to terminate their cooperation in 1968.

Fabricius and Kastholm was awarded the Illum Prize (1968) and the first German Gute Form prize for their FK Tulip chair (1969).

Fabricius died in March 1984 when he was only 52.

VINTAGE ROSSI APÉRITIF ADVERTISING ASHTRAY — SARREGUEMINES, FRANCE
A$180.00

A striking piece of early French advertising ephemera, this vintage Rossi Apéritif ashtray was produced in France by Sarreguemines-Digoin-Vitry-le-François and decorated for the Italian aperitif brand Rossi.

Dating to approximately 1930, the substantial white faïence form has a distinctive architectural, almost Art Deco profile, with a recessed circular bowl and four integrated cigarette rests.

The exterior carries the bold ROSSI APÉRITIF graphic in black and white over a vivid blue disc — a particularly strong example of the graphic language used in European drinks advertising during the interwar period.

The underside is marked Sarreguemines D.V. France along with Publicité VOX Paris, identifying both the French faïence manufacturer and the advertising agency responsible for the decoration.

Rossi was an Italian aperitif produced by the Rossi brothers in Turin and subsequently associated with Martini & Rossi. The brand's early French advertising is particularly notable for its collaboration with French graphic artist Jean Droit, whose distinctive Rossi imagery became one of the company's best-known advertising designs of the period.

A great example of early 20th-century commercial design, combining French faïence production with Italian drinks branding and the emerging graphic language of modern advertising.
